It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord,

And to sing praises to your name, O Most High.” Psalm 92

Warden's Report

Christmas is soon upon us, and we have lots to report in this issue, from the Christmas Gift programs to the Christmas Breakfast to ordering Christmas poinsettias for the church.

The collection for the Christmas Gift program, “Capital Mental Health Association” in Victoria begins, for us, on Sunday, November 26 to Saturday, December 9th. Many people who have experienced mental illness may no longer have family connections or the support of friends. Each year this time, Capital Mental Health Association begins collecting gifts and donations for persons with mental illness who are in hospital, care facilities and the community. The gift you offer may be the only one received at Christmas and it has a very special meaning that someone is expressing the message of caring in a tangible way.

If you wish to donate a new gift, it may be left unwrapped during the two Sundays mentioned above at the Church. There will be a decorated collection box inside the Church to receive your gift. If you wish to make a cash donation, it can be receipted for income tax purposes. Cheques should be made payable to the “Christmas Gift Fund”, Capital Mental Health Association, 125 Skinner Street, Victoria, BC V9A 6X4. Should you have any questions, please contact their office @ 250-389-1211.

Some suggestions for gifts that have been popular in the past are: Gloves, Mittens, Flashlights, Umbrellas, Wallets, Puzzles, Socks, Fanny Packs, Music Tapes & CD’s, Outdoor Scarves, Stationery & Pens, Toiletries, Slippers, Books, Toques.

Monday, December 4th, WA luncheon at the Springwater Lodge followed by making Christmas wreaths at Emily’s.

Tuesday, December 5th, Christmas wreath making at Emily’s, continued.

Thursday, December 7th, Men’s & Lady’s Christmas Breakfast at the Agricultural Hall, 8:30am. The men buy breakfast!

Thursday, December 7th, WA – Christmas wreath making at Emily’s Men’s & Lady’s Christmas Breakfast.

Thursday, December 7th, Church Parish Council meeting @ 2:00 pm.

Saturday, December 9th, Christmas Wreaths will be for sale at Island Elements.

Sunday, December 10th, White Gift Sunday. Gifts received are used to help make up Mayne Island hampers. If you wish to donate a new gift, it may be left unwrapped at the Church. There will be decorated collection box inside the Church to receive your gift. If you wish to make a cash donation, it can be receipted for income tax purposes. Cheques should be made payable to St Mary Magdalene Church – marked for White Gift Sunday. Some gift idea suggestions: Gloves, Mittens, Children’s toys, Outdoor Scarves, Toiletries, Slippers, Books, Toques and non-perishable foods.

Christmas Church Poinsettias: Please contact Mary Simmons to place your order. This newsletter is coming out a little early, however, she will be making up the list soon.

Treasurer's Report

As of October 31st financial statements, receipts totalled $61,228 (including donations of $7,870 to the new piano) and total disbursements were $54,254 resulting in an excess of receipts over disbursements of $6,974. Excluding receipts/disbursements for the new piano, we are above our budget forecast by $4,535.

Receipted donations are above budget, but we are below budget in our donations to Primate World Relief Development Fund (PWRDF) by $518. If you are considering making a donation to a charity this Christmas, may I suggest you consider the PWRDF. Your donation to this Fund, through your weekly donation, is added to your yearly tax receipt.

We have had no further news regarding the Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. In order to meet our $100/month contribution to the Diocese, Council approved transfer of $300 from General Funds to cover the Oct-Dec remittances. We understand we will have an update in the new year. As all reserve monies in this Fund will be depleted the end of December, the Budget Committee/Council will address this issue in January.

In addition to the projected Capital Projects for 2006, Council approved the expenditure of two new low flushing toilets in Church House at a cost of $602. Thanks to Ed Merinuk for the installation and to Martha Robertson for the financial donation towards the cost of the new toilets. With this additional capital expenditure we are $910 over budget to date (excluding the piano). However, budgeted donations to the Capital Fund for 2006 was budgeted at $850. To date receipted donations are $2,466.

At the November Council meeting, approval was given to purchase additional Blue Hymn books, Book of Alternative Services books, and a few Large Print Eucharist Service pamphlets. Funds for this purchase will come from a portion of the excess funds received for the new piano, which was put into a Music/Worship Fund. Thank you to all who contributed to this fund through the hard work of the Music Committee as the addition of these new books will be used for larger than usual attended services.

Also approved at the November Council meeting are the dates for the 2007 AGM. Due to Rob & Ellen’s plans for a vacation starting February, the AGM has been moved up to Sunday, January 28th. Therefore, all Annual Reports that require typing must be submitted to Bart Wittke (Secretary) by December 31st; Budget Committee meeting is Monday, January 15th (Sue will contact participants); Council Meeting to approve the budget as well as the deadline for the submission of all Annual Reports is Thursday, January 18th; AGM after Church service is Sunday, January 28th. It is a tight schedule and I am sure we will make it with your help.

Thank you to the Congregation and to the Friends of the Church for your continued financial support.

Church School (aka Sunday School) is again flourishing thanks to the efforts of Emily and Mary. Emily is always looking for additional books for the Sunday School library.
