Warden's Report |
We have a number of items to talk about in this month’s newsletter, and we begin with the events in calendar order with the announcement that Bishop James will be visiting our Church on Monday June 27 for a Church service at noon followed by a lunch at church house. Everyone is welcome to attend. Members of St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Galiano Island, will be coming over to join us for the afternoon service and lunch. (2) THEN, what everyone is waiting for: The annual Church Fair on Saturday July 9, 2005 from 10:30 to 3 pm. At the time of this writing most everything is in place. BUT, we are still looking for silent auction items (call Judy Waddell or Elaine Couling), AND bottles for Janet Guy’s Bottle Booth (full bottles may be left at the Sussex office), AND items for Betty Taylor’s “Items from the Attic” (call Pat Gasston to arrange drop off). (3) To all the men attending the Men’s Breakfast on Friday July 8th, please remember to bring some hand tools (Robertson screwdrivers and hammers) to set up the Church Fair right after breakfast. Breakfast is FREE that morning!! (4) On Sunday, August 7th, beginning at 10:30 there will be an outdoor Church service & pot luck lunch at Dinner Bay Park. There will be games for the children. Please bring a lawn chair or two with you. (5) Emily wishes to thank everyone for providing the children’s Church School class with novelty cards and tissue rolls. They have enough now. Also, Church School is seeking an assistant to help with the Sunday classes. If you are interested in lending a helping hand, please call Pat Gasston. (6) We received a letter from Father Antonio, of Saint Saviour’s Anglican Church in Victoria, acknowledging and thanking the congregation and the community of Mayne Island for the dedication and support of the Rios Bustamante family of Colombia. (7) Allegra sent us an email update (June 5). She is settled in her new home and is very happy to have her sister live with her once again. She says “we” are musical folk and have had fun playing her violin with her two other roomies who play the guitar & bongo drums. She was recently in Yoho National Park doing a prescribed burn and has never witnessed such chaotic fire behavior. The days on the fire line were long, mainly operating a chainsaw, but she did manage to hand ignite some of the burn with a drip torch. In one day, 7000 hectares were burnt (that’s about 17,290 acres!). She was leaving for Merritt soon and has been selected for crew boss training. On the lighter side, she hasn’t been out golfing – never one that has really has been too excited about the sport, however, she got recruited for scuba diving for golf balls in the ponds of a newly built course. “I love that much better than playing 9 holes!” (8) The latest word from Dennis is that Cilla has transferred to a larger hospital in Sierra Leone where there are more doctors and support staff. There are pictures of Freetown pinned to the notice board in Church house. (9) Once again, we will open the Church to visitors on Saturdays between 2 & 4 pm beginning July 2nd and continuing to Saturday, August 27. If you are in interested in hosting the open house, please sign your name to the sign up sheet in Church house. (10) Ed Merinuk has taken on the responsibilities for testing the water and maintaining the water supply to the Church house. Thank-you Ed. (11) Church Spring Clean – special thanks to Leanne Dyck, Brenda Hauck & Sue Atha |
Treasurer's Report |
In April, a cheque in the amount of $8,651.32, representing the net funds collected for a Colombia family, was sent to St. Saviour’s Church to assist them with their efforts to support a Colombian refugee family arriving soon in Victoria. We have received heartfelt thanks from St. Saviour’s thanking everyone for their contributions. The May 31st financial statements showed total receipts of $4,785 and total disbursements of $4,480. We are slightly below budget in receipted donations (due mainly to service cancellations in January) and donations to designated funds such as the Primate World Relief Development Fund and the School Settlement Fund. Disbursements are keeping within budget except Repair & Maintenance which is $270 over budget, due mainly to additional yard maintenance in the "grass productive" spring. Hydro is under budget by $1,855, however, we are expecting this credit balance to dissipate due to Hydro’s erratic billing system. Thank you everyone for your weekly contributions.
