Warden's Report |
We missed our council meeting this month due to scheduling, so in lieu of the meeting this newsletter will contain the Treasurer’s report, some news about up coming lectures in Victoria, a book offering, but first a comment on the members of the Roman Catholic tradition renting our Church & Church House. Starting on the first Saturday & Sunday in October our doors will be open for Roman Catholic services. This arrangement is flexible in the terms that our services or use of the Church is precedent over Roman Catholic services. As noted by Dennis Marcotte, Acolyte and person responsible for the mission parish, he writes, “Speaking on behalf of the catholic community of Mayne Island, I would like to express our deepest gratitude and thanks to Pastor Rob, Wardens Pat & Dereck for their wonderful offering and acceptance of the catholic communities’ request to use St. Mary Magdalene Church. God Bless each of you and may He keep you in his loving care.” Here’s a wonderful book opportunity for you to consider as an addition to your library. The name of the book is, Sacred Presence: In Search of the New Story by Robert C. Wild. Rob Wild is a retired Anglican priest who resides on Salt Spring Island. Critiqued by Don Vipond, a former writer with the Times Colonist writes, “What Wild does in Sacred Presence is pour a lifetime of study and thought into how Christians got from there to here and where they (and the rest of us) could soar to in the future, emboldened by a much richer, contemporary and inclusive faith story. He extracts the treasured essence of the Jesus movement and blends it lovingly with the exciting insights he has found on matters cosmic, environmental and social, as he sketches a framework for this new sacred story…” Please see or call Shirley Heslip (539-9914) as she has copies for sale @ $22.00. Marcus Borg, renowned author, biblical scholar & lecturer is coming to Victoria as part of an inspiring five days…Epiphany Explorations. A symposium offering rich resources for Ministry & Lay Leadership. The programme is scheduled January 13 to 17, 2005. There will be a brochure & registration forms available in Church House or contact First Metropolitan United Church 932 Balmoral Road, Victoria or through their web site: www.firstmetvictoria.com We are still in a ‘holding-pattern’ waiting for any news of the Colombian family arrival. Their home is ready for them and apart from some last minute items, we are ready to receive the family. The process of approving refugee applications through the various interviews, medical checks, and government red tape is lengthy as we are discovering. We ask for your continuing patience.

Treasurer's Report |
August 31, 2004 financial statements reflect total receipts of $56,510.36 and total disbursements of $40,021.73 resulting in an excess of receipts over disbursements of $16,488.63. Note that these figures include Colombian Family receipts of $9,985.15 and disbursements of $1,154.90. The church received a generous donation of $1,000 from a Mayne Island resident in which they requested the funds be applied to the upkeep of the church grounds. Therefore this money was allocated to the Cemetery ($500) and the Memorial Garden ($500). Denis and Jack will use the funds to maintain and upgrade these sites. Thank you to everyone for their continued support of the Church. |
