As you have noticed on your drive up to the Church, we have a much-improved roadway. We have the Victoria office of JJM Maintenance, Ross Kennedy, Superintendent, and our own Mayne Island JJM office, Richard Brown & JJM Salt Spring Island, Dale Johnson to thank for placing, grading & rolling 28 tonnes of gravel. We had budgeted $5000 to do this work based on hiring an off-island construction company, but through the kindness and the community spirit of JJM it has cost us $1000 plus taxes. We will be completing the top of the driveway soon for an additional $300 plus taxes.

Columbian Family

We are very fortunate and blessed that a Mayne Islander has made available his home to rent for the Colombian Family. It is a two-bedroom home for the mother and her son, located close to the Village. We wish to thank the many people who are donating to the Colombian Family Fund. The Island community and off-island friends are really showing their support for this family. All donations are gratefully accepted. Please indicate your donation to the attention of the Colombian Family, and may be mailed to the address below. The committee will be asking for assistance in preparing for their arrival. If you would like to assist, please contact Dereck or Pat. Included is a newsletter, “Three Braid Cord” from the Refugee Committee, Anglican Dioceses of British Columbia. We ask you to pray especially for our Colombian family and for the refugee programme.

Treasurer’s Report

For the fifth consecutive year, the General Operating Fund has ended with a surplus of funds. Donations increased by $4,000 over the previous year and net proceeds from the Church Country Fair increased by $1,900. The operating expenses were approximately $170 less than last year which resulted in a year end report showing Excess of Receipts over Disbursements of $7,400. Thank-you to the congregation and residents of Mayne Island for such a successful year. Capital improvements included in this year’s approved budget are:

Replace Stove: Church House Budgeted $250

Painting: Church (north side) Budgeted $700

Painting: Church House & Shed Budgeted $700

New Roof: Church House Budgeted $2,650

Driveway: Gravel & Repairs Budgeted $5,000

Note: The costs for painting & the new roof are for materials only. John Larsen said he is volunteering his time to re-roof Church House. Volunteers are greatly appreciated anytime throughout the year.

General

Please take a few minutes to notice all the work around the large rocks behind the Memorial Garden. Looks great! Now, we wait for the Spring blooms to arrive.

Did you know? Cloverdale Paints offers 30% off their retail marked paints if you present your BCAA membership card. We are currently using their paint products for the painting project inside Church House.

Yes, it is coming sooner than you think: The annual Church Fair is July 10 and the first Church Fair committee meeting will be March 1, Monday 10 am, Church House. Everyone is welcome to attend. This year’s theme is Colombian.

You will be proud to know that our Church will be one of the Churches pictured in next year’s Canadian Church Calendar. Peter Bresnen, the artist for St. Peter Publications in Nova Scotia, will be sketching a picture based upon photos that have been sent to him.
