Warden’s Report

Did you attend the Blessing of the Animals Church service last month? If you didn’t you missed something special: Bart’s two goats! Between the goats, the cats & dogs, and the rest of God’s creatures & people too, it was another special day enjoyed by all.

Did you notice the new ceiling fans? Installed by Wesley Mulvin on Friday, October 10. We missed the hot summer months when we needed them, but we have them now to circulate some of the warm air from the electric heaters under the pews. Thanks to Denis for his help.

News about the Colombian family refugee program. We are very pleased to announce that our Island community is pledging financially and in kind with promises of clothing, furniture, and kitchenware & free taxi service. We have a ways to go yet, and we thank-you for your continuing support. A special committee will be formed in the very near future to help us in establishing a smooth transition for this family. Lorna Kirby has volunteered to assist with setting up a committee; if you are interested in helping too, please talk to Rob or Ellen or a churchwarden.

Last week, following our Sunday discussion about the Colombian Refugee family programme at Church house, Edward Gale and I met with Fr. Antonio Orsorio and Violet Cantel, (churchwarden) at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church in Vic West to discuss and review the Refugee Sponsorship Application and to ask questions about the Colombian refugee family.

A Non Government Organization (NGO) in Colombia is looking after the family, likely by a Christian group. From the time the application is forwarded to Immigration Canada, it may be a minimum of nine months before the family actually arrives in Canada and to Mayne Island.

As far as completing the immigration application forms, our Diocese is the Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) with Fr. Antonio as the signing authority and the contact person. The Constituent Group (CG) is our parish, St. Mary Magdalene Church, with Rob & Ellen, Pat, Dereck and Sue (Treasurer) as signing authorities with Dereck as the Church’s contact person. The Co-sponsor is Edward Gale who along with the Diocese and our Church officially shares responsibility for the sponsorship.

Ellen serves on the Diocese’s Social Justice Committee with Fr. Antonio and along with Rob are very dedicated, committed and involved with the sponsorship of this family.

Total Income was $48,335.96 for the nine months ending September 30, 2003. Total Expenses were $42,735.32 resulting in Net Retained Earnings of $5600.64. The financial picture continues to look good with revenue ahead of projections, and expenses under projections. Donations to the PWRDF total $1,685, which is under our budgeted forecast of $1,920. The Schools Settlement Fund donations are $1,314.

Buildings & Maintenance

You can’t help but notice how wonderful the entrance to the Church looks now – again thanks to the efforts of Denis Simmons, Dennis Watts & John Larson. Two dead trees down near Georgia Point Road will be removed and if you have some spare time to rake up a few Sycamore leaves , please give Denis a call.

The Church windows were cleaned inside and out on October 1 by David Reid, Island Cleaning.
