Volunteer Firefighters - group of Mayne Islanders who are dedicated to protecting and serving our community, our friends, and neighbors. We are 22 + individuals of all ages and backgrounds, who, for some reason, willingly rush toward a burning building that everyone else is rushing away from!

THE VICTORIA HUMAN EXCHANGE SOCIETY has Branches on SaltSpring Island and Mayne Island. This totally volunteer non-profit society supports people who are working hard to solve their own problems. In this fragile economy, anyone can become homeless or unemployed almost overnight. The society encourages those who are still comfortably off to share gifts with those who are homeless, jobless and otherwised disadvantaged.

The society is grassroots, building the model of support around each persons's needs and challenges rather than fitting persons into an institutional model.
* special concern for people in recovery from drug and alcohol addictions
& people with mental illness; provides liaison to community agencies who provide therapy and 12 step programs.
* shared accommodations initiatives include Grandma's House on Salt Spring Island; as well as Bittancourt Manor & Fran Thibeau House in Sidney.

Note that Gulf Islanders may stay at the Sidney or Salt Spring Houses at $15.00 a night in an emergency. Regular monthly rates for these three houses are $375.00 --$400.00 single (incl.utilities and some basic foods and supplies). No pets/ No storage. Definitely no drugs or alcohol.

Islands Trust  -   in 1974 the Government of British Columbia enacted special protective legislation entitled the Islands Trust Act.   The Act states that the object of the Islands Trust is to:
"...preserve and protect the trust area and its unique amenities and environment for the
     benefit of the residents of the trust area and of British Columbia generally, in
     cooperation with municipalities, regional districts, improvement districts, other persons
     and organizations and the government of British Columbia

provides general and crisis counselling for adults, couples, families, and students; counselling for alcohol and drugs and prevention services ; mental health services.  All services are for residents of Mayne, Pender, Galiano, Saturna, and Salt Spring islands.  Gulf Island residents are welcome to come for confidential counselling on Salt Spring Island.

Vancouver Island Crisis Line also serves Mayne Island.  1-888-494-3888

Youthspace.ca  a service for youth to access if they have any questions or issues they would like to talk about.  There is an online chat with youth volunteers, moderated forums, and an access point to professional youth counsellors.

provides volunteer drivers from the ferry for medical and related treatment to the Peninsula and the Greater Victoria Area.  Need 48 hours notice. Must register for the program. Gulf Island residents can work as volunteers. Free income tax filing for low income families. Information and referral service. Help with filling out government forms, including (SAFER) Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters.

Short Term Housing for Stranded Gulf Islanders
There is now a house in Sidney, sponsored by the Victoria Human Exchange Society, that can offer short term accommodation to stranded Gulf Islanders.  Apart from the need to stay in town because of medical emergencies, there is also the need to stay over while attending college courses, workshops or even cultural events.   A donation is requested of 10.00 per night/per single;  15.00 per night/per couple.  More info can be obtained by phoning 5310 or in Sidney 656-0958.  or page 1-800-691-9366
